Advocacy
The 31st Ave Open Street Collective believes strongly in the power of public space: to unite communities, improve commutes, and spark joy. Outside of the Open Street, we’re involved in a number of campaigns to make Western Queens safer and more accessible for all.
Together with our elected officials, we helped advise on a comprehensive blueprint to combat traffic violence in our community, which sets targets to create additional public space, implement life-saving measures, and more. Alongside advocates and neighbors, we are now working to put the plan into action.
Western Queens Street Safety Plan
31st Street Street Safety Redesign
We canvassed, organized, and rallied for a life-saving redesign of one of Queens’ most dangerous corridors. A petition we co-sponsored garnered thousands of signatures. Now we’re calling on City Hall to get the job done.
Universal Daylighting
We asked neighbors to submit corners where they live that need ‘daylighting,’ which makes intersections more visible to all road users through things like paint, boulders and planters. The letter, submitted to the City and our local community board, got action. Now we’re pushing for universal daylighting in district- and citywide.
