COMMUNITY COOKOUTS

COMMUNITY COOKOUT SERIES

Food. Community. Cause.

That’s the simplest way to describe Tikkun BBQ’s annual Community Cookout series, held on the 31st Avenue Open Street every summer from 2021 to 2026.

What started in 2021 as a once-a-year gathering has since grown into a three-part summer series and become one of the largest and most anticipated event series hosted on the Open Street, with programming curated by Madeleine Koestner of Box Set Cinema.

With support from our Astoria neighbors, local businesses, elected officials, community organizations, mutual aid groups, and Tikkun BBQ, we activated the street with live-fire, Queens-style BBQ, music, film, art, and public service.

From serving free BBQ and screening movies, to hosting DJs, bands, artists, demos, and even live wrestling, the goal was simple: bring people together and make the street feel alive.

The series also supported causes beyond the block party itself, by raising funds for mutual aid and humanitarian efforts, and by distributing free public health resources such as Narcan kits and other community care items.
