Season 6 - Week 5

Holiday roooooooaddddddd.

Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and we have a busy program planned for the Open Street.

Let’s run through it:

Open Street Updates

  • A stretch of nice weather this week means that Phase II of the 31st Ave redesign has continued, with yellow paint coming down to mark the contraflow bike lane and traffic symbols.

  • Are those new bike traffic signals that we spotted going up next to the two-way bike lane? And are we the first in Queens to get them?

  • All of the curb outlays are also done between 31st and 33rd Street. So you can start to see how much space there’s gonna be :)

  • We broke the news to Astoria Reddit, but our daylighting letter from this winter is getting results.

News Clips

  • It’s a miracle on 34th Street! Or, rather, a busway! (NYCDOT)

  • And a ‘pedestrian paradise’ over on 5th Ave! (amNY)

  • We love to see the Tompkins Ave Open Street back in Bed-Stuy! (Instagram)

Support the Open Street

It takes a lot to run the 31st Ave Open Street, such as renting storage space, paying for insurance, or buying supplies like extra chairs, sidewalk chalk, and trash bags to keep our street clean. We list a few of the materials that we are in frequent need of on our donation page. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, we also take tax-deductible donations via Givebutter for those who would like to contribute financially.

We also just launched a new campaign to fundraise for this summer’s Community Cookout series. Countdown to movies and BBQ outside has begun, folks.

Every bit helps and we appreciate your support in making 31st Ave a better place for all! Thank you!
