Season 6 - Week 7

Is it already June?

Summer is nearly in sight, and we’re chuggin’ along with a packed schedule to celebrate the warmer temps and later sunsets. It’s Open Street season, friends!

Here’s what’s going on:

Open Street Updates

  • The Ave got its truffle glow-up this last week — with practically every inch of pedestrian space now covered in epoxy gravel. Folks: it’s all coming together.

  • Expect a whole lot of planters and granite blocks early next week. And if you see cones placed at the edges of the white lines, that’s done strategically! So help keep them in place, if you can :)

  • Regular reminder: the redesign is still a work in progress, and it’ll take time for all road users—drivers, pedestrians and cyclists—to adjust. So be cautious and graceful as we see the Ave transform in front of our eyes.

News Clips

  • The city is making a last-ditch lobbyist effort in Albany to rein in ‘super speeders,’ which we’ve seen plenty of firsthand on the street. (Gothamist)

  • A whole lotta people came out to cycle against the city’s crackdown on e-bikes. (Streetsblog)

  • West Harlem became North America’s first neighborhood to containerize its trash—or, rather, put it in big ol’ bins—this last week. (NYT)

Support the Open Street

It takes a lot to run the 31st Ave Open Street, such as renting storage space, paying for insurance, or buying supplies like extra chairs, sidewalk chalk, and trash bags to keep our street clean. We list a few of the materials that we are in frequent need of on our donation page. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, we also take tax-deductible donations via Givebutter for those who would like to contribute financially.

We also just launched a campaign to fundraise for this summer’s Community Cookout series.

Every bit helps and we appreciate your support in making 31st Ave a better place for all! Thank you!
